So why does a computer geek who owns a computer business, builds websites, thrives on software, and has even taught computer classes wait until August of 2008 to write his first real blog?
---- The simple answer --------
It's simple really... time, or lack thereof! I work, and work, and work, as the expression goes, like a dog.
---- The long answer -------------
I actually enjoy the idea of blogging... the community, being able to express yourself without the constraits of interuptions or scheduling, the sharing of ideas and topics, the focused communication. I personally like expressing myself in writing because I can think about what I really want to say without feeling cut-off or rushed. I may not be very good at it, but I like it.
"So why DO you work so much?" one might ask. Also an easy question to answer, money. Not that I crave it or need more of it, I just owe so much of it. Vena and I walked away from BU with some substantial debt. I can't give you a real accurate figure, but to give you an idea we pay much more in student loans monthly than our mortgage... it is our single largest expense.
In case you didn't know, Lansharx moved to a new location just one door down from our 1st spot. Our place is twice as big as the old one, and we are THE BIGGEST GAMING CENTER IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. This planning/remodeling phase was very difficult for quite a while. And although I do work a lot of late evenings and weekends, I do get to spend quite a bit of time with my wife and baby during the day. My working has calmed WAY down over the last several weeks. I'm back to a normal schedule, I have workers covering every shift, and I'm off most weekends. I get to see Sydney and Vena quite a bit during the day and evenings... praise God for His work.
Once we decided to have a baby, Vena and I made a prayerful decision to do whatever it would take to give her the opportunity to stay at home with Sydney. It was important to us. Well, what it took was a lot... I left my teaching job (well, i still teach 2 classes in the morning) to work Lansharx full time. Vena left teaching and took on some more tutoring. We sold our house and moved into a smaller one. And I work a lot. But it was and is worth it to us. Sydney is INCREDIBLE. I'm so thankful the Lord provided this opportunity for us.
(and fyi... I was really working this much already even while teaching full time. My first couple of teaching years I worked most evenings and EVERY Sunday about 4 - 6 hours preparing for the next week, taught 6 different courses, and still worked a summer job) Unfortunately, it has become the bulk of my existence, work... blah. I will say this, I have enjoyed my jobs (teaching and lansharx) tremendously. I have been right in the middle of people's lives in both places with real opportunities to minister and be ministered to. I do not regret either. I just long for more time to go do things that are, well, not work related.
So what experience do I have with blogging? Well most of it is second hand knowledge. Occasionaly I browse the blogs of our church members, former students, some lansharx customers, etc. Myspace is a pretty big hit at lansharx, probably our 3rd most popular thing on the pc's. I HATE IT. As I said before, i like the idea of blogging, I just think that myspace is one of the worst designed websites I've ever seen. some of you have a myspace that looks good, but of the thousands of myspace's I've seen, most of them are rediculously hard to read and navigate.
Another possible factor that has delayed my delving into the blogworld... I'm an idealist, and a idea person. I think about a lot of things and would love to discuss all of them, but I'm affraid I would get drawn into it and spend much of my day posting about things and neglecting my work/family "But aren't you doing that right now" you ask. Well, good point. I should be wrapping this up.
So here I am world, blogging for you. Read it, love it, come back for seconds.
Ok, so there's my first blog. As bad as it may seem, I'm sure it'll be 10 times worse once I'm well-rested and read it again tomorrow.
